Interesting timing! Only the other day I visited Nijmegen and had a good chat with Karel Martens over dinner (including discussing Kevin’s appointment). We agreed that the Dutch have been good at determining the practical aspects of good cycling provision (largely by trial and error it seems), but with relatively little formal research to confirm this. For us low-cycling countries, we still need the research evidence to convince decision-makers to make things happen (whereas it seems that the Dutch just get on and build it…).
